The Five Basic Skills Of Phonics
There are five key skills of phonics that a teacher must possess and as well develop in the learners. These skills are of equal importance. The five skills are not developed in isolation - instead, they are learnt concurrently.

Letter Names And Vowels
Letter names are usually mispronounced. In many school systems, it's not clear when the letter names are taught. Additionally, vowels are a concept that many teachers mixup. In this topic, we shall demystify the two concepts to the depth.

Syllables and word families

Consonant Blends
Consonant blends are taught after learners have learnt the 42 main sounds. They are used to consolidate the knowledge of the 42 major sounds of English. It should however be noted that learners meet consonant blends in words before they exhaust the 42 sounds.

Alternative Spellings
After children have learned the 42 main sounds in the initial phonics program, they should begin exploring the alternative ways some of these sounds can be written. It’s important for children to understand two key ideas: One sound (phoneme) can be spelled in different ways. One spelling (grapheme) can represent different sounds. Important notes: Don’t try to teach all the alternative spellings at once. For example, the long vowel sound “a” has six different spellings. Trying to teach all of them at once—especially to younger children like those in Primary One or Top Class—can be confusing. Start with the most common and simplest spellings, then gradually introduce the less common and more complex ones in later classes. For each sound or spelling: Build words and sentences with the children. Use stories that include words with the target sounds. Encourage understanding by relating new words to the children’s everyday experiences.

Other Sounds
Besides the 42 major sounds, there are some other sounds that we shall cover in this topic. These sounds comes in different spellings. They are not part of the 42 because they are more complicated and not so common. So, they are taight later.
